BOTB Results: "Because the Night"

Wow! This was so close! Patti Smith got 11 votes while Natalie Merchant/10,000 Maniacs got 10 votes. I know what you're thinking (Stephen...): What would be Cherdo's vote??

Natalie Merchant can't be beat? By all outward appearances, I'd have said that was possibly true. There's nothing NOT to like about her version of "Because the Night."

Well, boys and girls, Cherdo has always been a fan of the Boss and this particular song that represents one of Patti Smith's rare visits to Top 20. Honestly, a lot of Patti's stuff can't be sung in polite society. That is what made her so edgy back in the day. The High Priestess of Punk is one of a kind.

In honor of this occasion, let's have U2's Bono usher in The Boss and Patti Smith to sing "Because the Night" one more time:

The Battle of the Band occurs on the 1st and 15th with battle results posted on the 7th and 21st of the month.

A big thanks to Stephen T. McCarthy and Far Away Eyes for the genius behind the Battle of the Bands. Click on their links (and everyone else's blog link) below.

Hey, are you still here? I appreciate it, but there's more BOTB hosts to visit! You better scoot 'cause we've got some more members (you can't hide a good thing). Of course, I alphabetized the list of our wonderful participants for your convenience. I'm nice like that (sometimes).

If I missed a new participant, I'll add you as we go along. Point it out to me...I'm a geezer who needs that backup.

  1. DOC CHERDO ~
I'm just about to go to bed (in preparation of another grueling day at work tomorrow) but saw this pop up in my Dashboard. I never turn down the chance to be Commenter #1.

I could be mistaken, but I think this is your first REALLY CLOSE BOTB.(?) Nice contest! I like Springsteen's studio recording of this song. Live? Not so much.

My Battle this time was a TOTAL BLOWOUT, but then I planned it that way. Ha! To be 'splained tomorrow.

    1. It's was already tomorrow when you wrote that (ha ha). And this WAS my first really close one! I'm trying to get a little better at this. There's hope for me.

Hope you had a good day at worky-work.

  3. That's such a high compliment to say it's THE song they wish they's written. Not just A song, but THE song.

  5. Sorry I missed that one. Keel did the original version of that song.

    1. Nope, they were about ten years later. But Keel's version is awesome (a touch of Gene Simmon's influence there).

  6. Good morning, dear Cherdo!

Boss schmoss! Nobody but nobody croons this tune like Sid Vicious! However, it pleases me to be on the winning team in voting for Patti Smith. Regardless, it was a great battle and I am happy for your sake that it was even-Stephen to the very end.

I'm on the road again today, dear friend, and need to scoot. I'll see you tomorrow!

    1. Patti Smith rocks it! Nothing wrong with Natalie Merchant, either - I just prefer Patti. If I work on it, I may find another close one for the 1st.

I'm thinking of going Broadway on it...always gotta be different. I may be violating the "Band" rules. I hope I don't get pulled over and get a ticket.

My friend, I'm out the door, too. Errands abound!

  7. I didn't win but at least I only lost by one vote. Funny my outcome was the same with the winner by one vote. Hope your day is a great one!!!

    1. Naw, Natalie lost. You weren't singing IN THIS ONE. But that can change if you send me a video...make sure it is a cover.

  15. I cry foul! I know for a fact there were 10,000 votes for Merchant.
What do you mean stuffing the ballot box is not allowed?
