BOTB: "Mirrors"

Jump on before this crazy train leaves the station!

We're pulling Gonzo in his wheelchair; no one gets left behind!

WELCOME TO THE BATTLE OF THE BANDS!!!

Our battles take place twice a month: on the 1st and 15th. The results come six days later: on the 7th and 21st. That's when I return, total all of the votes, including mine (if necessary), and announce the winner.

This music blogging event first introduced by our friends
and I'd like to give them a heartfelt "thank you":

Fae @ Far Away Eyes
Stephen T. McCarthy presents...

This month, I'm featuring that youngster, Justin Timberlake. Memphis born Timberlake has a long career already, in spite of his youth. At a child,  he appeared on Star Search and The All-New Mickey Mouse Club but his biggest break came with the "boy band" NSYNCH.

Every group endeavor has down time and Justin used that to his advantage to start his solo career. Nine Grammys, four Emmys, three number one hits and two spins on the list of "the 100 most influential people in the world" equals not too shabby for your early thirties.

"Mirrors"
by Justin Timberlake

Aren't you something to admire, 'cause your shine is something like a mirror
And I can't help but notice, you reflect in this heart of mine
If you ever feel alone and the glare makes me hard to find
Just know that I'm always parallel on the other side

'Cause with your hand in my hand and a pocket full of soul
I can tell you there's no place we couldn't go
Just put your hand on the glass, I'm here trying to pull you through
You just gotta be strong

'Cause I don't wanna lose you now
I'm looking right at the other half of me
The vacancy that sat in my heart
Is a space that now you hold
Show me how to fight for now
And I'll tell you, baby, it was easy
Coming back into you once I figured it out
You were right here all along
It's like you're my mirror
My mirror staring back at me
I couldn't get any bigger
With anyone else beside of me
And now it's clear as this promise
That we're making two reflections into one
'Cause it's like you're my mirror
My mirror staring back at me, staring back at me

Aren't you something, an original, 'cause it doesn't seem merely assembled
And I can't help but stare 'cause I see truth somewhere in your eyes
Ooh I can't ever change without you, you reflect me, I love that about you
And if I could, I would look at us all the time

'Cause with your hand in my hand and a pocket full of soul
I can tell you there's no place we couldn't go
Just put your hand on the glass, I'm here trying to pull you through
You just gotta be strong

'Cause I don't wanna lose you now
I'm looking right at the other half of me
The vacancy that sat in my heart
Is a space that now you hold
Show me how to fight for now
And I'll tell you, baby, it was easy
Coming back into you once I figured it out
You were right here all along
It's like you're my mirror
My mirror staring back at me
I couldn't get any bigger
With anyone else beside of me
And now it's clear as this promise
That we're making two reflections into one
'Cause it's like you're my mirror
My mirror staring back at me, staring back at me

Yesterday is history
Tomorrow's a mystery
I can see you looking back at me
Keep your eyes on me
Baby, keep your eyes on me

I don't wanna lose you now
I'm looking right at the other half of me
The vacancy that sat in my heart
Is a space that now you hold
Show me how to fight for now
And I'll tell you, baby, it was easy
Coming back into you once I figured it out
You were right here all along
It's like you're my mirror
My mirror staring back at me
I couldn't get any bigger
With anyone else beside of me
And now it's clear as this promise
That we're making two reflections into one
'Cause it's like you're my mirror
My mirror staring back at me, staring back at me

You are you are the love of my life
You are you are the love of my life
You are you are the love of my life
You are you are the love of my life
You are you are the love of my life
You are you are the love of my life
You are you are the love of my life
You are you are the love of my life
You are you are the love of my life
You are you are the love of my life

Now you're the inspiration for this precious song
And I just wanna see your face light up since you put me on
So now I say goodbye to the old me, it's already gone
And I can't wait wait wait wait wait to get you home
Just to let you know, you are

You are you are the love of my life

Girl you're my reflection, all I see is you
My reflection, in everything I do
You're my reflection and all I see is you
My reflection, in everything I do

You are you are the love of my life

CONTENDER #1:
Boyce Avenue featuring Fifth Harmony

Alejandro Luis Manzano and his brothers, Daniel Enrique Manzano and Fabian Rafael Manzano form the band Boyce Avenue (a combination of the streets the boys lived on as children). With a strong acoustic sound and tight harmonies, this band is a favorite on the tour circuit and YouTube. They opened for One Direction on their "Up All Night Tour" of Great Britain and Ireland.

Their submission includes Fifth Harmony, an American girl group that formed in the second season of The X Factor (American version). Their story reminds me of One Direction - five individual singers brought together to form one tight harmony group. Of course, this claim needs some supporting evidence...

CONTENDER #2:
Sam Tsui & Kurt Schneider

t's a new world out there, folks, and these guys know how to work it!

Sam Story Tsui is an internet celebrity, singer and songwriter who rose to fame doing covers of popular artists. His frequent collaborator is musician, singer, songwriter and video editor, Kurt Hugo Schneider

Schneider's primary medium is YouTube music video and a quick "google" will attest to the legion of musicians that have worked with him. I'm thinking we will hear more from these guys. Quit listening to me and start listening to them:

Vote, peeps, vote!  Who do you think covers it better? Boyce Avenue featuring Fifth Harmony OR Sam Tsui & Kurt Schneider? Why?

Tell us your choice in the comments below and then head over to the other participants' blogs and take part in their battles. Tell 'em their ole' pal, Cherdo, sent you.

YOUR DAILY DOSE

THANK  YOU

We've had a bit of a rough time around here due to Gonzo's terrible accident last month. I'm humbled by your generosity of spirit and the way many of you reached out to me privately to ask about Gonzo's condition and showed concern for his welfare.

To everyone who prayed, offered kind words and support - I thank you from the bottom of my heart on behalf of the whole crazy family. The recovery will not be quick; prayers continue to be appreciated.

  1. Good morning, dear Cherdo! I think about you and Gonzo many times every day. Although his recovery will take a while at least he will recover. For that your family can be thankful.

I am glad to see that you were able to put together a band battle for October 1. I definitely liked act #2, Sam Tsui & Kurt Schneider, better because they offered a fresher sound, one that breaks free of the standard hip hop formula, and performed the song with greater joy and sincerity.

I continue to keep you in my prayers, dear friend Cherdo. Happy October to you. Surely it will be a much better month for your family than September was.

    1. Thank you, Shadzilla, for your friendship and kind thoughts. We are very aware of the fact that this is a PRAISE story, not a story of loss. It makes me shiver to think of the image of the firemen removing him from the car. I don't know if I'll ever get that out of my head, but I can say that every minute that beyond that point is better - because it's further away. Or farther. I'm too lazy to grab the grammar book. Where's Janie when you need her?

But, now for the whole reason we're here: A VOTE FOR SAM & KURT!!

I'm not sure I can even pick in my own battle, ha ha. You'll have to wait till the 7th to see if I need to...

      Have a great day, s.d.knight!!

  2. This is a new song to me--I like it!

Both versions are excellent, but my favorite is the first one by Boyce Avenue. It had more purity and clarity.

So, I'm gonna go do something else and come back. This is a good battle, Cherdo... I'm at a loss here...!

  10. DOC CHERDO ~
That Band-Aid on the Smiley Face was a great touch. Made me chuckle-out-loud.

I had no idea that Timberpond was in NSYNCH. I'd never even heard of him until he pulled the top off of Michael Jackson's sister. (There's no such thing as "bad" publicity, is there?)

This song really isn't in my wheelhouse. Of course, you probably could have guessed that when Lee expressed his approval of it. (You could almost set a "Taste Watch" by Lee and me. Just one of life's many mysteries.)

I vote for Blue Oyster Cult.

    No? Not a valid vote?
OK, then the second version gets the nod from me because it sounds a little less frantic, I believe.

BOC? No reeper zone. He's not allowed anywhere near me.

So...A VOTE FOR SAM & KURT from the big man himself!

  11. Cherdo, I like this song by Timberlake. Between the two competing artists I liked Boyce Avenue featuring Fifth Harmony the best. They kinda remind me of S Club 7 singing together, which I like. Give them my vote, please. BTW, so good to see your son despite being in a wheelchair. It's by far better than it could be, as we both know. God speed to him! Nice battle, my friend!

  15. I prefer Sam and Kurt-the voices harmonize better for my ear drums. The first band were too typical in style and the 2nd was less typical but I could understand them better. Nice to see you back here and you must have been just in a constant state of stress. Thankfully, he is home right? Thinking of you and prayers to you and your family

    Just a cleaner version.
Group #1 was good but for me just another group of good voices with more good voices so it became the same old groups with each getting a second to sing. Kind of muddled (?) for me.

Hahahahahahahahaah loved Gonzo's photo. What a hoot.
Oh My Goodness I am happy to hear that all is improving.

  19. Both of these covers were super awesome. I think I heard Justin's a couple weeks ago; I don't normally listen to pop music, but it was better than a talk radio show. I liked the song (and Justin).

  21. I'm back!

I decided to listen today without watching. Sometimes looking at the video is too distracting. And then I can't decide if I like the song or the video....

I know I already said this BUT, I think this song is the bomb. One of the best "pop" songs to come out in a long time. The lyrics are actually thought provoking. (And I do love the JT video:)

So, what about these covers? I still like both of them. It turns out that without the video distracting me I like Boyce Avenue better. I can see the vote is leaning heavily in their direction, so part of me wanted to throw Sam Tsui a bone, but I really liked the harmony sections on the other one. So, it's Boyce Avenue for me.

ALSO, I'm so glad that Gonzo is doing better. Will continue to pray for him. I looked for an email addy for you, but couldn't find one. I think I might be impaired...

I looooove JT!! He is crazy talented and makes me laugh so hard when he is on SNL. I cant help it but I love I'm Bringing Sexy Back. He's just the right person that can pull that off.
I thought both versions of the battle were interesting. I like both of them for different reasons though.

I'm sure that he's still in a lot of pain though, and I can only imagine what you've all been going through with the multiple surgeries. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. First and foremost, I'm glad to hear that your son's recovery is going well. I'm sure he still has a long road ahead of him, but it sounds as though things are progressing nicely. I'll continue to pray that there are no set backs and things continue to heal.

Now, for this BOTB...another song that isn't regularly on my radar. I am definitely not a Timberlake fan. I think I like the second one better, It seems smoother even though I would normally go for the harmonies, there just seems to be too much going on in the first.
