2016 Battle of the Bands: "Fight Song"

WELCOME TO THE BATTLE OF THE BANDS!!!

PEEPS! So glad to see you back on the Flipside. It's 2016 and if my head count is correct, we are all here. That's the first celebration. A few of you may not have hangovers, right? RIGHT? I may have a headache from German Katze Kinder (licorice shaped like a cat...I can't explain it...it's addictive and I forgot to hide it from myself).

This music blogging event was first introduced by our friends and I'd like to give them a heartfelt "thank you":

Our battles take place twice a month: on the 1st and 15th.  The results come six days later: on the 7th and 21st. That's when I return, total all of the votes, including mine (if necessary), and announce the winner.

The slate is clean and we begin anew; embrace it. Let the games begin! Start this year out right with a little inspiration in song.

First up, Rachel Platten with "Fight Song." Released in February of 2015, the song peaked at #20 on Billboard. It already wins as the most current song I've ever included in a Battle of the Bands but I'm not sure that will mean much to Platten. Somebody call her and get her take on it. I'll wait.

Get fired up! Let's whip this year's tail and own it. Sing it, Rachel! Feel it, peeps!:

THE ORIGINAL: RACHEL PLATTEN

Folk singer (yep) Benjamin Kheng of the Sam Willows is next up. This guy is a cluster of talents (swimmer, radio producer at 17, actor...gee whiz, I feel so lazy. Sing something, Ben, I gotta snap out of it...

CONTENDER # 1: BENJAMIN KHENG AND KHS

Alex Goot started his career at 16 and he's known for producing his own stuff, so I'm glad to find a cover I can use! Watch this lad play all the instruments and think of me: I'd get someone else to scratch my back, if possible. This kid could teach me something for the new year.

CONTENDER # 2: ALEX GOOT

You know the drill - vote for your favorite: Benjamin Kheng & KHS or Alex Goot. Then boot-scoot over to my good friend's humble (or fabulous, you're the judge) blogs and check out their bands and battles.

Last but not least, have a
Happy New Year!
Make it your number one resolution. Bless you, peeps.

  1. Friend, Cherdo! Wow - great song and covers!!!! This is not an easy peasy battle. Forget Rachel, I enjoy the two covers better... now, um, whom to choose? It might just be me, but Benjamin's version seems to be in a lower scale range... yeah, I know, whadda I know? I'm playing both, a third time. I'm sure all the details in my brain might confuse you - heck - they do me.

Wait - I got it. I vote for Alex Goot & friend... love it. In fact I'm adding this song to my collection of "pick me up stuff" for 2016! (That should clue ya, I'm not drinking... nobody here to pick me up!)

Great battle - can't wait to see how this turns out. Happy Sweet 2016!

    1. Darlin' Dixie, thanks for sharing my sentiments. We all need some feelgood tunes. I'm drinking sparkly grape juice, so look out, world. The bubbles are doing their magic.

You really put in the effort - a repeat listen! That's my girl: A VOTE FOR GOOT!

  2. Tie, but I'm voting for The Goot just for his name! Plus he put a lot of time in putting the song together. I've heard a few one man operations over the years. They are usually pretty good but they don't stick around long.

    1. A VOTE FOR GOOT! I think the real way he spells his name (originally) is Gud. Surely there is a German tie-in there somewhere.

      Thanks, Mike!

  3. Both were very well done. I think #2 inches out for the win though.

  5. Wow—these kids are super talented! Alex blew me away with his one-man band... But it's Benjamin's sound that won me over. They're both excellent, though, and—since I'd never heard of either—I'll be looking them up to hear more of their stuff. Thanks for the introduction, Cherdo! And an absolutely ravishingly joyful 2016 for you, friend!

  8. I have to give it to Alex Goot because of the way he sang the song. It's like he really meant it and must have gone through some battle. I was thinking of you over the holidays and I am certain you have been feeling so blessed that your son and everyone is safe and there this Christmas. May 2016 be filled with happiness , health and many blessings

  9. They both are talented and Alex went above and beyond by mastering all of the instruments. BUT I really like Benjamin's voice better, so he gets my vote. Great song to start off the New Year! Wishing you a very happy and healthy 2016, Cherdo!

  10. Alex Goot all the way! Benjamin did a great job but I was so impressed with Alex playing all the instruments and the talent it takes to do all that, he gets my vote.
I like the original version too. Great battle.

Happy New Year to you Cherdo! May it be a fabulous one!

  12. As some of the others have said, the covers are much better than the original. Alex Goot is pretty goot (can't believe no one made this pun yet), so I'll give it to him.

  14. The Goot, the name makes me laugh. It reminds me of Diff'rent Strokes, when Gary Coleman had to deal with a bully at school whose name was "the Gooch." We never got to see this gooch but I always laughed, so my vote goes to The Goot. LOL! :)

    1. All I can think of when I hear "Goot" is the German word for good: gut. It's pronounced like "goot." Birgit can back me up on this one, ha ha.

It's funny how things will trigger a memory and pull it right out of your noggin'.

Thanks, my friend! A VOTE FOR GOOT!

  16. I don't know how I've missed this song (the original, I mean), but I love it. So thanks for sharing it with me.

I like both of the covers. I really admire how Goot plays all of the instruments, BUT I like the sound of Kang and KHS better. Plus, I was very entertained by watching the one guy run all over the room to play various instruments. ;) No, I didn't allow the video to sway my vote (because I truthfully visually enjoyed them both very much). However, give my vote to Kang and KHS.

I just read over the comment thread. Looks like I'm on the losing end of this one (again). But, I'm not changing my mind!

    1. Time will tell the outcome - I've been surprised more than once.

I have a hard time ignoring the videos, though. Music videos are so much fun to watch and they really can add something to the enjoyment of listening to a song. What's not to like about a visual, right?

A VOTE FOR BENJAMIN KHENG AND KHS! Thanks, Robin, and best wishes for the new year!

  17. I have always liked this song and up until recently I always thought it was Taylor Swift. HAHA! Don't you think she sounds a little like Taylor? Anyways, I liked both but I am with the majority on Goot because of his crazy talent of the instruments. Happy new Year Cherdo!!!!

  18. I've never heard that song. It's catchy. I vote for Benjaming Kheng, but what does "of the Sam Willows" mean? Is it similar to Anne of Green Gables?

    1. The Sam Willows are an acoustic group he is in (easily confusing). Anne of Green Gables makes much more sense overall. But we are flipsters and making sense is not now, nor EVER, required.

A VOTE FOR BENJAMING KHENG AND KHS! Love ya, Janie-poo.

  19. This is one of those catchy tunes that became so catchy and overdone that now it kind of annoys me to hear it. It's even used in at least one commercial. Stop it already!

Fortunately you've picked two versions that were varied enough that they were almost tolerable to listen to.

Ben's voice annoyed the hell out of me so he's nixed from getting any vote from me.

Alex was pretty Goot however. Talented guy and he sang it without hiccups and weird vocal inflections.

My vote goes to Alex Goot.

    1. I know how you feel about the overdone tunes, but Netflix and dropping cable has fixed that problem for me. Yippee! I can't go back in time but I won't use a song twice, so is that close enough to stopping? 'Cause brother, I aim to please.

A VOTE FOR GOOT! Thanks, Lee! Ben will now be silent, ha ha.

  20. DOC CHERDO ~
Where has this year gone? Why am I so late getting over here?

Hmmm... Well, I listened to both a couple times and I think I gotta give my vote to Benjamin Kheng.

I really didn't care for Alex's singing. His voice frequently sounded strained, like maybe he wasn't singing in a comfortable key for him. Or maybe he's just more of an instrumentalist than a vocalist.

OK, now, I gotta get serious about making this year a heckuva lot better'n that last one was. I hope yours is too, my dear friend!

A VOTE FOR BENJAMIN KHENG AND KHS! (Totals to be done tonight...small delay, but I have a perfectly good excuse, ha ha).
