Battle of the Bands: "Don't Give Up"

WELCOME TO THE BATTLE OF THE BANDS!

This music blogging event was first introduced by our friends and I'd like to give them a heartfelt "thank you":

Our battles take place twice a month: on the 1st and 15th.  The results come six days later: on the 7th and 21st. That's when I return, total all of the votes, including mine (if necessary), and announce the winner.

Brevity is my new mantra! I'm determined to keep up with dearly loved battles and the A-to-Z, just like most of my good pals.

Peter Gabriel carved out a solo career post-Genesis and was a staple of early MTV, with hits such as "Sledgehammer" and "Big Time." I never was a huge fan of either of those, but today's song was always a favorite.

Kate Bush was a quirky sort of talent, usually bouncing around to her songs (if you've never seen Noel Fielding do his "Wuthering Heights" skewing of Kate Bush, well, I howled. Kate is here...Noel is here in all his glory...you're welcome, ha ha).

Our other contenders, John Legend and Pink, teamed up with Herbie Hancock in 2010 to offer their spin on the song. I gotta admit, it's a tough decision as to which one I like better.

Ladies and gentlemen, let's battle with "Don't Give Up."

CONTENDER #1: Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush

CONTENDER #2: JOHN LEGEND AND PINK

Well, what do ya think? Will it be Pete & Kate or John & Pink? Why does this sound like a battle of cartoon characters? You know the score, friends - vote in the comments and join me back her on the 21st for the results.

  1. Am I the only one who got a little bit dizzy watching Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush spin in circles? Perhaps that had an effect on my vote, I'm not sure. You are right, both really good contenders.
Please give my vote to John Legend and P!nk.

  3. I had no idea Kate Bush sang with Peter Gabriel. Love both of these artists. They win my vote for sure!!!

As per Mary above, this is a good reason why I tend not to watch the videos. Just listen.

  4. I'm a fan of all things Genesis and I do like this song a lot.

This is a tough choice as both versions are pretty equal. The second collaboration is absolutely beautiful, but I still prefer the Gabriel/Bush pairing. I never knew that was Bush on the female vocal. There's something about Bush's voice (quirkiness?) that stands out for me in this version and Gabriel is as good as always. Though I do have to say the instrumental part by Hancock and band is phenomenal.

Peter Gabriel with Kate Bush is my vote.

  5. I really shouldn't watch the videos. Ever. I didn't like either one visually. The spinning (and clutching) in the first one was distracting (and dare I say it?... disturbing). John Legend was crazy hands/arms in the second one. I know he was probably just "into" the song, but he looked high as a kite. Pink, who is normally the one to do whacky things, was actually very normal. The whole thing was super strange to watch.

So, the song. Maybe my ears aren't all that refined, but I didn't detect that much difference in the two versions of this song. So, for me, the choice is what vocals do I prefer? That's an easy call. I like Peter Gabriel and I love Kate Bush's voice, so there you go.

Pete and Kate (the cartoon). That's my vote.

  7. I have to give it to John Legend and Pink. I like Pink's voice more and it sounds stronger. Now if it was Pink and Peter Gabriel that would be stellar:)

  8. Voting for Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush.

JL does better than I expected. But Pink does worse than I expected.

  11. Hmm, tough choice. Both sounded about the same. Hard to vote against Peter Gabriel though, so that gets my vote.
