Battle of the Bands: When You Were Mine

WELCOME TO THE BATTLE OF THE BANDS

Hi and howdy! A lot of us have been "a-to-z-ing" through April and May is a welcome arrival. Did you make it? Well, it's back the battle time!

This music blogging event was first introduced by our friends and I'd like to give them a heartfelt "thank you":

Our battles take place twice a month: on the 1st and 15th.  The results come six days later: on the 7th and 21st. That's when I return, total all of the votes, including mine (if necessary), and announce the winner.

Last month saw the death of yet another music original, Prince. Love him or hate him, there's only one Prince. Several online sites mentioned the fact that Prince's tunes were frequently associated with other artists. In fact, some of those tunes were MAINLY associated with other artists. With that thought in mind, I've chosen today's battle contenders for the song "When You Were Mine."

CONTENDER #1: PRINCE

CONTENDER #2: CYNDI LAUPER

Two talented artists, one great song, and once again, what's not to love? Vote and comment, please, and I'll be back to do the countin' in a week. Okay, I lied, I'll be back to check the progress sooner than that.

Now, go visit the other folks who participate in the Battle of the Band, give 'em a blog style pat on the back and check out what is going on with their battles:

  1. Prince songs seem appropriate for this round of Battles. Good choice.

I'm not familiar with this song--or at least I don't remember it. This song is so fitting for Cyndi Lauper and I really like her music. Prince does a good job, but when he first started out it made me think of Cyndi Lauper (though I was undoubtedly influenced by your inclusion of her).

Give my vote to that great 80's sound of Cyndi Lauper.

    1. You know, I love the 60s sound...the 70s sound...the 80s sound...pretty good with all the decades but this reminds me of young fun, dancing with friends and gluing my ear to the radio.

      Thanks, Arlee!

  2. Lady Cherdo!

Glad you survived the A-Z... rest up for next year!

This is a tough choice. I like both artists' versions. Can we somehow combine them? I like some of Prince and some of Lauper, but not a big fan of either. However, I know this song. I'm going with Prince, no matter what the strangeness I found his more appealing!

Have a great battle and coming week, (smile).

    1. Thank you, darlin' Dixie! I'm gonna start thinking of my theme...some people were super clever and mine could have been better. But the participation pumped new life into me (that and some things coming off my schedule, yay!).

      A VOTE FOR PRINCE!!

  3. Not to fond of either but Cindi's version has more music to it so I'm going with her.

  4. This is a tough one as I like both artists. When I dissect the songs, however, Cyndi has a lot going on in her song - giving it that great 80s flair and Prince is a little bit watered down, making it slightly more enjoyable to listen to. That being said, I'm going to give my vote to Prince. Good, tough battle! (I'll have mine posted tomorrow)

  5. I don't really like this song but I like Cyndi Lauper's version better. When Prince's version first started playing, I thought I might have hit the wrong one and was actually listening to Cyndi's! Cyndi's was clearer and cleaner so I'll go with her version.

    1. Cyndi's version is the more familiar one and I SO associate it wth most os the stuff I listened to on MTV due to it's major airplay.

A VOTE FOR CYNDI! Thanks, Michele!

  7. I am not loving Prince at all with this version...sounded like a cat turning into a violin. Give me Cyndi Lauper with her perky styling.

    Oh...

Well, then we vote for CYNDI over Queen. ...I guess I mean "Prince".

Seriously... where's the great TINY TIM when you need him?

Did you notice that I did the A-to-Z, and got here for the BOTB, and did Michael's QOTM? I'm back! I feel a second wind.

  9. I'm with the others that say they didn't care for Prince's vocals in this. That falsetto just doesn't really do it for me. I'll cast my vote for Cyndi.

    1. A VOTE FOR CYNDI! Thus disproving the theory that the original will always win...or does it? Tune in for more voting this week...

      Thanks, guys!

    2. I believe an ORIGINAL HIT will always (or very nearly always) beat a non-hit cover version.

But when the ORIGINAL is not well known, I think the cover then comes in on an even playing field and has just as much a chance at victory.

I believe I'm finished with putting ORIGINAL HITS against lesser known covers. The outcomes are too predictable.

  10. I don't remember this song so it's brand new to me. Prince sounds so tinny on it--no, not tiny. I don't care for the odd vocal. I vote for Cyndi because she gives it everything she's got on every song. And after all, like me, she's so unusual.

  11. First, congratulations on finishing the A to Z. I could tell that you were stretched thin this months, so the fact that you did it... kudos.

I'm sad that Prince has passed. I'm happy that a person can FINALLY find his music on YouTube. I think he spent time daily checking YouTube for his songs to report any that were there, so that YouTube would take them down for copyright infringement. ::sigh:: As someone who recognized the power of MTV, he missed the boat on YouTube. Oh well.

Now, on to this song... I'm not a fan of Prince singing exclusively in his falsetto voice. I don't mind it when it is occasional (think Kiss), but this was hard on the ears.

Sadly, this isn't my favorite Cyndi recording either. But, I prefer it over Prince, so she gets my vote.

I hope that the move goes well, Cherdo. I read something about it over on FAE's blog. Keeping you in prayer...

    1. "I'm happy that a person can FINALLY find his music on YouTube." YES!! I wanted to use The Beautiful Ones...couldn't find it until after his untimely demise.

A VOTE FOR PRINCE, IT IS!

Thank you for your kind thoughts...and I'll gladly take that prayer!

  12. I know I'm supposed to like Prince, but he has never convinced me enough to be a mega-fan of his. I know it seems like everyone is. Perhaps there is something I'm missing. True, I do love some of his music, just not all of it. I do like Cyndi Lauper music and I have to admit, I prefer her version of this song. Please give her my vote, even if I am likely in the minority.

    1. No, Jeffrey, you don't have to like anyone, ha ha. This is the Flipside. We do what we want (okay, I do try to make people play nice while they are here, but other than that, DO WHAT YOU WANT). I'm a bit like you with Prince and everyone - like some songs, some not too much. Maybe the Beatles are an exception...naw, I just remember "Honey Pie."

A VOTE FOR CYNDI! Thanks, Jeffrey!

  13. Howdy Neighbor! :D I see you survived the A2Zer. I barely made it through with my hair and sanity intact. Now, I'm playing catch up. *smack forehead* I'm already thinking ahead to next year, too. Ok, ok, this post isn't about that challenge it's about music. I'm easily sidetrack. Sorry about that. I don't remember this song. I don't care too much for Prince's music style. Cyndi Lauper has a funky, unique sound that's undeniably recognizable and for this reason I'm giving my vote to her. Interesting battle. Thanks for dropping by to cast your vote, my friend. Have a good week!

A VOTE FOR CYNDI!! Thanks, Cathy!

  15. Never been a fan of 'the purple one' especially his falsetto numbers, but I like even less Cindi and her WWF Stick, as far as I'm concerned she only had one hit that I could tolerate, so give that guy with the moving target of a name my vote.

    1. Oooh, you hit the name on the head with the falsetto. Very few people can pull that one off. Franki Valli, maybe?

I'd forgotten about the WWF and Cyndi Lauper, ha ha.

A VOTE FOR THE MAN FORMERLY KNOWN AS PRINCE AND THEN NOT AND THEN PRINCE AGAIN! Thanks, FAE, my friend!
