Battle of the Bands, Xmas-style: "Baby It's Cold Outside"

Merry...oops, not yet! But, it's certainly close enough to get in the spirit with our feetsies firmly in December. Are you game? Let's do it! First and foremost, however: This music blogging event was first introduced by our friends, Fae and Stephen, and I'd like to give them a heartfelt "thank you":

Our battles take place twice a month: on the 1st and 15th.  The results come six days later: on the 7th and 21st. That's when I return, total all of the votes, maybe even mine (and it CAN happen - did you check out last battle?), and announce the winner.

There's a zillion versions of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" (quite a few disturbing amateur's trying out the ole' GoPro camera pre-holiday...{{{shiver}}}...you've been warned). So here's some interesting pairings that I'm fond of and I hope you like them, too.

But who do you like MOST? Aww, that's where the fun begins.

First up, Idina Menzel (Broadway crooner most famous for Rent and Wicked, but also for the most butchered pronunciation of her name by one John Travolta...legendary mockery abounds). Don't believe me? Check it out here. I felt sorry for JT, but DUDE! Come on...it's her name and your one job was to introduce one person...sheesh.

Prayers for Michael Buble, that smooth croonin' man recently left the spotlight to spend time with his family when his very young son was diagnosed with cancer. Come on, you can add a prayer, right? I knew I could count on you.

 CONTENDER #1:
IDINA MENZEL AND MICHAEL BUBLE

Welp, ya gotta admit, that was pretty sweet, but don't get carried away with that vote yet. Idina and Michael have a lot going for them, but they don't have the power of REDBONE

Zooey Deschanel (the television show The New Girl and her musical endeavors as She & Him's front man, er..., woman, er... person are her claim to fame). She's cutesy cute and that is apparently pretty polarizing.

Leon Redbone is steady Eddy, paying homage to songs of the past while keeping it cool. A visit to his website gleaned a great Leon quote: “In some ways I’ve always been complacent in my approach to music,” Redbone says. “So in some ways maybe I’m the pure definition of consistent.”

Personally, I've loved him since the first time I saw him in the late 70s.

Enough talking, more listening...here you go:

CONTENDER #2:
ZOOEY DESCHANEL AND LEON REDBONE

Does that put you in the spirit a bit more? Are you feeling "merry?"

A final note:

I ask all my friends out there to pray for the town of Gatlinburg, TN. As a neighbor and frequent visitor to Gatlinburg, I'm saddened by the loss of life and property due to recent wildfires. Over 15,000+ acres have been consumed, 7 dead, 53 injured, and I can only imagine the wildlife killed or displaced. Help is flooding the area but they can always use more prayers. A lot of people are hurting, scared, and feeling overwhelmed tonight. Keep them in your thoughts and prayers, please. That is the best kind of Christmas spirit.

  1. Sad to hear about Gatlinburg and area. Glad it rained.

The first time I heard of Leon Redbone was from my sister after she and her husband saw him on SNL sometime in the 80's. He's entertaining but not my favorite.

Both these versions of this song are better than most I've heard. The Redbone & Zooey version is interesting. The Buble and Idina video is might cute and I prefer the vocal styles better. But this is tough--they both have a lot of merit.

Okay, my vote goes to Buble and Idina. Gosh when you just say that without seeing the words it sounds like a disease or something--bubleandidina.

    1. MICHAEL & IDINA!

Redbone is unique; sometimes, I really dig the one-of-a-kind voices. Rod Stewart is another one of those cats.

      Thanks, Lee!

  2. Very sad about Gatlinburg. I vote for Buble and Idina. I hope you are doing well, dear Cherdo, sending you much love and warm hugs. :)

    1. It really is sad; a husband had been on the television looking for information about his wife and daughters, and then I found out that they both were killed in the fire. So sad - any loss, not just theirs.

Love to you, Linda! As my schedule frees up, I'll be around more!

  3. The fires around - and in - Gatlinburg are terrible.
My vote goes to the first one. Didn't hurt that the video was also cute.

MICHAEL & IDINA! And you're right...cute never hurts, ha ha.

  4. I thought this choice would be tough, but I decided as soon as I heard Leon Redbone and Zooey Deschanel. Those two get my vote. I'm already praying for the affected areas in Tennessee. The news has been shocking. Please take me off your BOTB list. I'm taking a battle break.

    Love,
    Janie

  5. Sad events, both for Michael Bublé and family and the people of Tennessee. :( Sending Best wishes and Positive Thoughts on all fronts!

Interesting battle here, with completely different vocal styles. I think Michael and Idina are a smoother matchup, so, please give my vote to them.

      MICHAEL AND IDINA IT IS!

  6. DOC McCHERDO, amidst all the sad news, you still managed to make me laugh. ...That John Travolta video!!

I enjoyed both of these duets, but... the first one combined great voices (and a very cute video), while a little bit of Leon Redbone (say, about two minutes worth) goes a long way for me. Plus, Leon once said something mean about Tiny Tim and I've never forgiven him for it.

    So...
    You know
    Where my vote
    Should go.

    1. MICHAEL & IDINA! The John Travolta video cracked me up. Not that I'd ever laugh at someone else's blunder, but...oh, yeah, sometimes I would.

Somewhere in my noggin, I had the idea that you might like Leon Redbone...but I didn't anticipate [insert dramatic music] THE TINY TIM FACTOR. That'll do it. No love for Leon, quote the Raven: "Nevermore."

      Thanks, Doggle!

  7. This was an easy choice for me. My vote goes to Idina and Buble. I like Zooey & Redbone well enough, but the first two seem to knock it out of the park.

    Great battle!

  8. Idina and Buble get my vote. Idina was not familiar to me so I looked her up. From her pictures she looks like she's very tall but not. She's 5'4". For some reason her voice doesn't go with her picture to me.

  10. It's so very sad what's going on in Tennessee and I pray they get these wildfires under control as soon as possible. The loss of life and the effect on the wildlife makes me cry. So sad. Thanks for remembering them in your post.

I liked your battle. The song definitely got me in a December mood and I'm waiting for more cold weather to find its way to Texas already! As for which version I prefer, I liked both but I much preferred Idina Menzel and Michael Buble. Redbone's voice can be a bit jarring at first but then I grew to like it, but Idina and Michael just wrap that song up in a nice little bow!
    Great battle Cherdo.

Thanks, Michele - we are all praying for Gatlinburg. It's so sad. The community is rallying around them and it is a sight to see! No one volunteers like a Tennessean. Everyone is pulling for them.

  15. You are right, Zooey is all kinds of cute, even if the spelling of her name makes me irate. Kind of like my friend Aymie. It just doesn't look right. I always want to pronounce Zooey's name to rhyme with gooey.
But we are not here to critique name spelling ability. We are here to critique singing ability. Zooey and company are ok. But it's just okay. I love Bublé and he does a great job along side Idina Menzel. Please give them my vote.

  16. I really like Zooey D (She and Him are way underrated). That said, I didn't care for this version of this song. It dragged and was not fun. Especially after the super fun first with top notch vocals. It was out of the ballpark great. Menzel and Buble hit a home run and snagged my vote.

  17. I love Zooey singing it with ELF( will ferrell) in the movie Elf. I think she sounds great!
My vote goes to Idina though. She is amazing! I love her in RENT and Wicked.
I posted on FB this week a post where Dolly Parton is donating 1000 dollars to every family affected by the fires. She's such a legend in every way.

    1. Will Ferrell either charms you or irritates the stew outta ya. ELF is one of those movies I like, for sure. But RENT is a soundtrack that I listen to over and over, and Idina Menzel is one of the reasons why.

Dolly is THE REAL DEAL, as they say. She's epic and homey at the same time.

MICHAEL AND IDINA! Thanks, my friend!

  18. I like both! You're wicked:) it is hard for me to choose because they are so different but keep to the original. I love Leon and Zooey but I will choose Idina and Michael because it is so classic in style. I do send my prayers to him and his family and the little boy...very sad. So are these fires and I hope they stop soon.

  20. I'll admit it, I'm a sucker for Michael Buble. When I first started dating my wife, his song 'Haven't Met You Yet' kept coming on at the most cosmically perfect times, as if to signal from above that we were meant for each other. It's also the first song we played at our wedding.

So damn right I'm voting for Buble (that Idina chick can come too, whoever she is...) and damn right I'm praying for him and his family.
