The 1st Battle of the Bands of 2017: Get Motivated!

Well, it's a new year! I know, because I made sure this posted at 12:01 a.m. (EST, of course). By any measurement, it's solid 2017. Ladies and Gentlemen...and you others...it's the BATTLE OF THE BANDS.

As always, this tuney, hum-right-along blogging event was first introduced by our friends, Fae and Stephen, and I'd like to give them a heartfelt "thank you" to the one and only: Fae @ Far Away Eyes and Stephen T. McCarthy presents...

The skinny: Our battles take place twice a month: on the 1st and 15th.  The results come six days later: on the 7th and 21st. That's when I return, total all of the votes, maybe even mine (I had a tie in 2016!), and announce the winner.

January 1 is the time when we all look for motivation to venture forth into the new year. Everybody's different. That got me wondering: what would a motivational song look like to YOU? In a different twist for the first Battle of the Bands of 2017, I'm giving you three artists and lyrics and asking the musical (okay, it's not musical, as I am not singing it) question:

Which song is the most motivational to you?

CONTENDER #1: The Foo Fighters
"WALK"

CONTENDER #2: David Bowie
"HEROES"

CONTENDER #3: Tom Petty
"Runnin' Down a Dream"

So, did any of these make you feel inspired to get up and go? To tackle the new year? To be a hero or chase a dream?  Put your vote in the comments and I'd love to hear the reason you chose one song over another. I don't judge, ha ha.

Don't forget to visit my peeps, far superior battlers!

Wait...what am I forgetting...oh, yes:

  1. Well, I've pretty much felt like crap the last couple of days with a year end bout of a bug of some kind. I need some motivation. However it's gonna take a lot to get me going tonight.

I'll exclude the Bowie song though I do like it. The Foo Fighters song could grow on me and the parody of one of my favorite films Falling Down is clever--that does pick me up.

But on the music alone, I've got to go with Petty. Love anything Petty does and this is a great song.

Hand my vote to "Running Down a Dream".

    1. Everyone I know has had one kind of bug or another this winter. Ugg! I hope it's passed by now.

Loved that you liked all on one level or another, but like you, I love a whole lotta Petty! Thanks for the vote!

  2. DOC McCHERDO ~
I loved this concept! Great way to begin your 2017 'Battle Of The Bands' run, Sis!

Hokey-Hokey-Smoke & Hoo-Wee!! If this Battle were about the videos rather than the music, I'd kill myself in Chicago so I could vote early and often -- about a godzillion times -- for the Foo Fighters. That is without a shred of doubt one of the greatest music videos ever, Ever, EVER produced!

Of course the fact that it's (as Lee pointed out) a wonderful parody of the movie 'FALLING DOWN', which just happens to be one of my TOP 25 FAVORITE MOVIES ever made, doesn't hurt matters.

Right after that film came out, I used to tell people: "If you want to know why I left Los Angeles -- the city where I was born and raised -- go to the theater and see 'FALLING DOWN'. Then you'll understand!

For anyone who may not be familiar with the movie and wants to know why Lee and I loved that Foo Fighters' parody so much, here's a good place to begin: [Link:] 'FALLING DOWN' movie trailer.

The movie itself is simply one great scene piled on top of another great scene, and so on and so forth. It's like a compilation of great scenes woven together into a story that any P.O.'d major metropolitan dweller can relate to. Who hasn't, at times, fantasized about becoming William Foster for a day?!

But since this Battle is about the music and not the videos (again, like Lee) I have to vote for TOM PETTY. He's one of only a small number of Rock stars from my teenage years that I still really dig (I own 7 compact discs of his music) and 'RUNNIN' DOWN A DREAM' is a big favorite of mine -- perhaps even Top Ten in the "Petty" department.

Ahh, CHERDO, you are off to a great BOTB start in 2017. In fact, this is probably my favorite Battle you've ever put together... so far. You are seriously in the groove and groovy these days, Sister! Keep groovin'!

    1. "I'd kill myself in Chicago so I could vote early and often -- about a godzillion times"...once again, McCarthy, you made me snark my drink out my nose when I laughed at that.

Falling Down is a huge favorite at our house. Probably my favorite Michael Douglas movie and I felt sorry for the dude! William, oh William...he's just gonna go home, people! Leave the man alone. Of course, his wife wasn't so fond of the idea...whattaya gonna do.

Thank you for the STMcC seal of approval on this battle and your vote!

  3. Runnin' Down A Dream is a great song. Great guitar riffs. And the last minute of the song could go on forever as far as I'm concerned.

    1. That guitar riff haunts me, it's SOOOO good. Have you seen the documentary of the same name? It's on Netflix, I believe. Fantastic!

  4. I'm a gonna get bashed, but Running is one of my least favorite TP songs.

I guess I have to go with the FF, although its safe to say that on NYD, I don't have a whole lot of motivation...

  6. Not a fan of the Foo Fighters and although I like some of Bowie's stuff, this was not one of them. Tom Petty all the way for me. I've seen him in concert a couple of times and this one really rocks the house! Happy New Year to you!

    1. You can't go wrong with Tom Petty, and I wish I had seen him in concert. Now I'm jealous, ha ha.

      Happy New Year, Janet!

  7. So you already know the Foo Fighters song is a parody on the film Falling Down. It's ok but my least favourite of the 3. I always like David Bowie but this one didn't do much for me so I have to give it to Tom Petty. Great song and love the tempo. As for invigorating me...none do it...hahahahaaa. Now if it was The Impossible Dream or You'll Never Walk Alone....different story. Happy New Year and may this ear be kind to you and your family.

    1. You'll Never Walk Alone was a sort of graduate theme song for a choir I was in. The director (still living!) sang it to seniors. Everyone cried, lol.

      Happy New Year, and thanks!

  8. Tom Petty gets my vote.
Not a Foo Fighter fan and the Bowie song is just OK.

  9. Happy New Year Cherdo! For me, it's definitely the Foo Fighters. Not because the video is a parody of the film, and not because I think Dave Grohl is damned sexy, but because the lyrics really speak to me.

Don't you pay no mind / Set me free, again / To keep alive, a moment at a time / That's still inside, a whisper to a riot / The sacrifice, the knowing to survive / The first decline, another state of mind / I'm on my knees, I'm praying for a sign / Forever, whenever, I never wanna die

I'm on my knees, I never wanna die / I'm dancing on my grave / I'm running through the fire / Forever, whenever / I never wanna die / I never wanna leave / I'll never say goodbye / Forever, whenever

Learning to walk again / I believe I've waited long enough / Where do I begin? / Learning to talk again / Can't you see I've waited long enough? / Where do I begin?

There are times that I find myself struggling and these lyrics come to mind, and I get motivated to re-invent myself and make it through the tough times.

Great battle. In case you missed it, I'm voting for the Foo.

  10. Cherdo, I hate to say it but none of these tunes really motivated me. Of course, I have a bum ear right now - all stuffy and draining. I can't hear very well plus I have a headache, so perhaps this is swaying my mood and decision. However, if I go on the mewsic along then it Runnin' Down a Dream gets my vote. I pray 2017 brings good health, happiness, love, and success in all you do. I'm looking forward to continuing to build on our lovely friendship throughout another new year. Sending hugs and love your way, dear neighbor!

  11. Cherdo, love this idea!

When I saw the contenders, my first thought was this: we're going to find out how old everyone is with this battle. Except I knew McCarthy would vote Petty, despite this being an 80s song. It's Petty.

Turns out I was wrong. Not the first time and won't be the last.

I wonder if you'd gone with Don't Stop Believin' instead of Heroes if that would have changed anything.

I LOVE Runnin' Down A Dream. One of my favorite songs ever. So, another vote for Tom Petty!

    1. Ha ha ha, agism is a big factor in this one. Literally, I wanted to cover all ground. If I'd used Don't Stop Believin', I'm certain it would have pulled more votes (but I was a big Journey with Steve fan...note the specification).

      Thanks, Robin!

  12. Well, "Running Down a Dream" for me. I honestly think, by and large, that I've run down my dream. Not completely, mind you, but the fact I have still more to go keeps me...uh...going.

  14. I seriously love all three of these bands/singers!!! Like really love them.
If i had to vote i would go with the Fighters of Foo because that song really gets me. Its actually my moms favorite song so its special to me too.
Running down a dream comes in second and then Heroes would roll in last. I love me some Bowie but this ones not my favorite. I do like the version of the song performed by the Wallflowers ( Bob Dylans son is the lead singer).
    Happy New Year!

  15. Happy New Year Cherdo! What a great way to start off the 2017 BOTBs! I love it!
The song that gets me goin' most is Tom Petty's Running Down a Dream. Such a great song. Gets me in the mood to achieve! So Tom Petty gets my vote.

Loved the Foo Fighters video. I immediately thought of Michael Douglas in Falling Down. That was a great movie!

    Excellent battle Cherdo!

  16. Happy New Year! This is a very cool idea for a battle. So, the Foo Fighters are my generation, but they just really don't do it for me, even though that's a really fun video (also a big fan of Falling Down). Never been a big fan of Bowie at all. Musically, Running Down a Dream gets me every time. Give our vote to Tom!

  18. Excellent BATTLE theme mam. Is there any doubt that I would vote for Tom (be still my heart) Petty. Yeah, he could motivate me to do about ANYTHING.

ALSO, I've been meaning t come by and thank you for continuing t acknowledge me as a creator of BOTB. I may be gone from the game, but not forgotten, at least not by everybody, and I really appreciate THAT,
