Battle of the Bands Results: "Always On Your Side"

Well, that was a close one! If you were in on the voting, thanks so much. But nothing can knock Sheryl Crow and Sting off of their perch. It might have helped if I had remembered to say "don't vote for the original, just the contenders." This is an example of what one might call "rusty blogger syndrome."

If you've followed past Battles, you already know I'm a sucker for a slow, melancholy tune and this was in that genre. Lyrics are incredibly important to my enjoyment of music and if I can't connect to the lyrics on some level, there's zero chance that I'll put it on my personal hit list.

Basically, you could do my biography with a list of songs and years. The little details just mess up the story. Bam. 'Nuff said.

To the victors! Sing us out, Sheryl and Sting:

Now, sashay over to my peeps' blogs and see what happened. Was it a shake up? A total shocker? How did you do? I'll see you back for the battle on the 15th of the month (I'm a once a month kind of gal…).

    1. Huzzah! Huzzah! (Why doesn't anyone say "huzzah" anymore, or is this example an answer to my question?).

This comes from someone NOT suffering from RBS ["Rusty Blogger Syndrome"]: I think it's a mistake to include a video of the original recording if that recording is not intended to be a competitor in the Battle.

I know that many BOTBers do this, but even when they say "DON'T VOTE ON THIS ONE!" they invariably get one or two persons who vote on it anyway. Either because reading comprehension is poor, or they merely skim the text and don't really read it, or they dislike both of the competitors and vote for the original anyway, despite the blogger's wishes.

Personally, I don't really see a good reason for including a recording of a song that isn't part of the competition (i.e., What does it matter how the original sounded if it's not an option in this contest?) You know, as Henry David Thoreau wrote: "Simplify, simplify". (Although it would have been simpler had he written the word just once.)

However, for those who nevertheless want to include the original recording, I would suggest doing it as a clickable link rather than a video embedded on the page. When some people see the video, they seem to automatically assume it is part of the Battle.

Happy Friday, my friend. I will see ya again for the August 15th BOTB installment.

    1. There's more than one thing wrong with my "return to the netherworld" post, brudder! I didn't realize that I numbered them wrong. Sadly, I type a ton every week…go figure. Maybe it was because I made it huge…therefore, harder to see…

I like the comparison, but I certainly see the complications that are built in to blogs that include the original. Perhaps I can be a cautionary tale. That has always been my goal in life and in many areas, I'm there. :-)

Battlin' once a month is a good fit for me. Hopefully, I'll ease back in the swing with some other posts, too.

      Ciao!

  4. Hi Cherdo; I assumed Sheryl and Sting were part of the contest, because you labelled the other two contender #2 and contender #3, so it looked like a three-way battle. How could they NOT win? ☺ Have a good weekend.

    1. I'm an idiot…did I mention that? It's key to understanding me.

(But…YEAH. I only use songs I love in battles. Thanks, Debbie!).

  6. I started to vote for the original, but it didn't seem quite right. I'm started to lean more towards not including the original since, like Stephen said, some folks insist on voting for it no matter what. It is nice to have an original version for reference though.

    1. Yeah, I like the original but Stephen makes a lot of sense with the idea of a link only. Usually, the original is really a favorite of mine and that fuels the desire to share. Too many songs make it hard to get through the bloghop!

      Thanks, Lee!

  7. Cherdo! It's been so long! I'm trying to visit the bloggers I've accidentally neglected. I will do my best to visit you more often. I hope to hear from you, and I hope you're well. :)

    I love Sheryl Crow.
