Battle of the Bands: The Dream Battle

Hello and howdy, and let's give a big salute to the fellow who coined the phrase, "I have a dream..."

As always, this love fest is the product of my friends, FAE (never absent in my heart, always in my prayers, and just one heck of a gal) and Stephen T. McCarthy (yep, that's the guy). I'm aonce a month participant on the 15th, and returning on the 21st with results of YOUR voting, so let's get this show on the road.

Bands aren't the only source of great of great songs and you just have to look at the theater to find a big, steaming mess o' wonderful classics. Some of the most famous vocalists of the past decades have taken advantage of the availability of this wellspring of tune-age.

I have a dream of a battle...of musicals...and musicians...and YouTube...all coming together with the common theme: dreams...

CONTENDER #1:
I HAVE DREAMED/THE KING AND I
PEABO BRYSON & LEA SALONGA

CONTENDER #2
WHEN I FIRST SAW YOU (THERE'S MY DREAM)/DREAMGIRLS
JAMIE FOX & BEYONCE

CONTENDER #3
I DREAMED A DREAM/LES MISERABLES
ANNE HATHAWAY

Now that I look back on those, this looks a little highbrow, ha ha.  It's a new year, why not be a little risky?

Your turn: which song do you like best? Do you like musicals? How about the whole concept of acting meets singing? And are you glad or sad that I didn't use Susan Boyle for "I Have a Dream" (her famous "Britain's Got Talent" performance).

Vote and I'll see you back here on the 21st!

Flipping out...still...

  1. Jamie Foxx and Beyoncé get my vote. I preference of musical style on this one. Should be an interesting battle.

  2. I saw the original Les Miserables cast perform in London, so that song has a special place in my memory - and gets my vote.

  3. I liked the film musical version of King and I with Yul Brynner, but I don't remember this song. The version here was a bit draggy for early morning. I'd probably like it better in context of the musical.

I figured the Les Miserables would strike my fancy the most, but, alas, I didn't care for the drama of it.

Give my vote to the Dreamgirls song. I liked the film (to my surprise) and the music was very accessible to the casual listener. This song stands alone and kind of reminds me of something by Lionel Richie.

  4. Oh my! I liked the Anne Hathaway one very much! But all were good in their way.

  5. Gotta go with "I dreamed a dream" from Les Miz. Anne Hathaway deserved the Oscar she received for that performance alone! I vote for her!

  6. Such a tough choice. I think I'm going to go with The King and I. This is an interesting battle!

  7. ANNE HATHAWAY only because this is more of a song rather than a sing talking video. Did you get the point that I am NOT a musical fan? My wife and daughter go to musicals. I always uninvite myself.

  9. First one. Others just annoyed me. Guess I'm not much of a musical guy.

  10. Cherdo,

Thank you for stopping by yesterday. I wanted to first mentioned that the playlist at the top of my post isn't my battle. My showdown is actually at the bottom where I have three individual YouTube vids. If you wish to come back when you have time to vote on one of these then great but if not no worries! :)

Your writing style always makes me smile. I loved your theme which honors the late MLK - great idea! I'm not a mewsical kind of gal for the most part. Sure there are some I like okay but overall I can live without them. This was an easy decision for me. I by far preferred Jamie Foxx & Beyonce. His song is the only one that doesn't sound like it belongs in a mewsical. :) Interesting and cool battle!!

  11. Good Morning, SIS ~
I think you've become The Queen Of Theme.

I have not seen any of these productions, although I do like a goodly number of Musicals. I used to think I didn't like Musicals in general. But then one day I started listing in my mind "the ONLY musicals that I like; those very FEW", and when that list just kept getting longer and longer and longer, it suddenly dawned on me for the first time that OBVIOUSLY I DO like Musicals.

In this Battle, I'll give my vote to the first one, I HAVE DREAMED / THE KING AND I. It just sounded the best to me while drinking my hot Japanese Sake this morning.

  12. Do you want to know something goosebump amazing? “I Dreamed a Dream” came on my Pandora station as I was opening this post. No joke. So, I guess I have to vote for that one.

And I love the Susan Boyle video - floors me every time. Posted about it recently.
