Battle of the Bands: In My Life

 Friends, I'm BACK!

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water: it's Cherdo. Always a "promise keeper," and I told my dear ole' pal, Stephen T. McCarthy that I would return. Oh, the tales I could tell...but I won't right now! It's time for the BATTLE OF THE BANDS!

This musical mayhem was started by my dear friends, FAR AWAY EYES and STEPHEN T. McCARTHY. A new Battle gets posted on the 1st and 15th of each month and six days later, on the 7th and 21st, I place my own vote if necessary to break a tie, math it up, and announce the winner. Of course, there will be a bit of yada yada. You expect no less of me.

In celebration of my return to the fold, I have chosen a personal favorite. Though I am of the opinion that no one should challenge the iconic songs, here are some heavy hitters in their own right: Bette Midler and Ed Sheeran.

First, the original: let's hear it, mop tops!

THE ORIGINAL:  In My Life
The Beatles

CONTENDER #1:
Ed Sheeran

CONTENDER #2:
Bette Midler

Well, what do you think? Too sappy? I love this song, so stick with me. Vote in the comments below and then sashay over to my buddies' blogs and vote on their battles. It's how we do things around here.

See you on the 21st with results!  Till then, I'm cruising the flipside, folks.

  1. So glad you're back! I've added you back on to my link list.

This is among my Beatles favorites. My oldest daughter used it as one of her wedding songs. It's a beautiful song for any occasion I think. Maybe someone will play it at my funeral someday.

Oh dear, let me get to the vote. Both versions are extremely good. But my favorite her is going to be Bette Midler. I don't even like her most of the time, but this arrangement and performance is really good.

  2. I don't like either of the cover versions. Gimme the original! That quirky little harpsichord solo is what always made the song so compelling, as far as I'm concerned.

  3. Can I pick the Beatles? Neither cover comes close. (Sorry Ed and Bette!)

  6. The Beatles are perhaps the best writers in pop. I prefer Paul over John and don't think Paul would disagree. Heck, John may not even disagree.
I vote for sure, for Bette Midler.

  9. Hey, what's up, DOC?!

So good to have you back with us BOTBers. I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say, "Mele Kalikimaka!"

I guess all y'all know by now that I am far from being one of The Beatles' biggest fans, but I do like this song. It makes me think of the past, and that's a good thing. (Thinking of my Grandpa right now.)

I dersn't know who this ED SHEERAN guy is. Is he related to Billy-Bob and Bobbie-Jo Sheeran? Their son, perhaps? Well, even if he isn't, he's getting my vote.

Wonderful to have you back. I'll bet you really missed my stream o' consciousness comments, eh?

    1. I did miss your stream o' consciousness comments, but I have your cell phone number...ha ha. It patched the hole nicely. You're the best, brudder.

You need to investigate Ed Sheeran. I'm pretty fond of his stuff lately.

Thanks for taking me back, and I'm visiting blogs this morning. Ahhhh...old me.

      A BOTE FOR ED!

I committed to trying to vote on McCarthy's and Lee's contests from the very beginning, but sadly I rarely get to other battles. However, since I read that now you WERE BACK, I wanted to come over to your neck of the internet and vote this time!

I'm staggered that Stephen has not heard of Ed Sheeran, having my own self recommended him listening to one of Ed's songs last week (to play while watching last time's skateboarder video.)

Nah... Sheeran isn't THAT popular. Search YouTube for Sheeran and the first three songs show up with 2.4 BILLION views, 1.7 BILLION views, and only 1.4 BILLION views for the poorly performing third song. HA.

I like the Beatles and this is one of my favorite Beatles songs. Sheeran does a nice job, and Bette isn't terrible... but I've never liked Midler much. She has that dreaded "slow vibrato" that I dislike. So I am voting for Ed, in spite of how unpopular he is in the marketplace.

    1. Awww, thanks, Mike! I love this song, too. In general, I'm a sucker for melancholy, reminiscent tunes and acoustic guitar homages.

  12. Both of us are back! How 'bout that?

My favorite cover of this is Judy Collins's, but she ain't competing here. So...

First, the sample you chose of the Fab Four doing it was blocked by the MG's. I went and listened to my version on "Rubber Soul," but there may be an official version out there on VEVO.

Now, on to the battle: I think Ed Sheeran's voice is higher than Bette Midler's. Nevertheless, I liked his cover better, so he gets my vote.

  13. Welcome back! I hope we get to see you more here in blogland. This is a good battle because both are strong. I love Ed Sheeran’s voice and he does a great take on this great song but I a, voting for Bette who makes it look like she hardly needs any effort to sing it which is not the case. It’s so hard to this song I. Such control so I give Bette my vote

  14. Welcome back!
Not a fan of Midler, so Ed gets my vote.

  15. I adore this song. No way is it too sappy. I never though I'd vote for someone other than The Divine One, but I prefer Ed's version. Its simplicity is sweet and lovely. The accompaniment makes the difference.

    Love,
    Janie

  16. I too love Ed.s version.
Welcome back. I have been thinking of you.

  17. Ed wins.

Truly an amazing song. So many love songs in the world and so few that say something... different. I don't know of another song that says quite what "In My Life" does. True genius.

    So glad you're back.

  18. Just to even things out a little I'm going with Bette Midler.

After the 21st are you going to disappear for six months again? It won't do you any good. Life will still be waiting for you.

  19. Cherdo,

I'm so glad to see you back and thanks for stopping at my place over the weekend to give me the heads up of your return! ;) My vote goes to Bette Midler. Her versions seemed more thoughtful. Have a bandtastic week, my friend!

  20. You sure are back, and in YOUR life. I vote for the beatles, because, yeah, they're THE Beatles.
