Battle of the Bands: 2019!

Happy New Year, my peeps! It's been...a year. Bye, 2018. It's time.

This romp was started by FAR AWAY EYES (smooch...prayers continue, friend) and STEPHEN T. McCARTHY (different kinda prayers, ha ha). If you're new to it, a Battle gets posted on the 1st and 15th of each month and results appear magically six days later, on the 7th and 21st. You comment below and tell me which tune your favorite and why (if you want to elaborate). If necessary, I add my own humble vote to break a tie and announce the winner.

What happened to my results post for December? I don't know. A wise friend advised me to pretend it was on purpose; it's an idea I like.

So...you can count as well as I can - the winner was Nathan Drake, by only one vote! (Nathan: 6, Marcy: 5, St. John's Choir: 4). Click on the link to check out our last winner of 2018. 😄😄😄😄

2019, my friends! It's a BRAND NEW DAY!! While we're on the subject, here is a non-taxing kind of question:

Which one of these artists
gave us the best song called
"Brand New Day?"

CONTENDER #1:  VAN MORRISON

CONTENDER #2: STING

CONTENDER #3:  RYAN STAR

Your task is before you. Are any of these "Brand New Day(s)" actually new to you? Is one clearly the winner? Does your fan status sway you (come on, tell the truth...). Vote in the comments below!

Then, hustle on over to my friends' blogs, and quickly! They're waiting!

See you one the 7th with results, I promise. Cross my heart and yada yada yada.

Let's have a great year, God willing. Give it your all, it couldn't hurt. Do a little good here and there.

Hugs,
Cherdo

  1. It wasn't easy, honestly. So close for many reasons. But I settled on Van Morrison.

It's wise to surround oneself with wise friends!

Doc, I'm sure you haven't visited Cathy's BOTB yet. You'll know why I say that soon enough...

I just came from Cathy's Battle, and to save myself some time, I'm pasting below a portion of what I posted in her comment section:

Hokey-Smoke! What a great song to use in BOTB on a January 1st! I mean, I think it’s a great song to begin with, but to begin the New Year’s BOTBing with it? Now THAT’S brilliant!

I know this song so well. It’s from Van’s ‘Moondance’ album, which I have always owned in one format or another. And I have always loved this song! I have a distinct memory of listening to it through my Walkman headphones while riding on the Venice Beach bike path one morning. This tune is very meaningful to me. In fact, on my recent road trip with my brother, Nappy, I kept saying “It’s a new day”, and it was THIS song I had in my mind every time I said that. (As you can probably tell, I feel very hopeful about 2019 – and it’s uncharacteristic of me to feel strong hope about any new year.)

Heck, Van Morrison is unquestionably one of the very greatest songwriters in the history of Rock music, and you just now inspired me to put on my ‘Moondance’ CD which, idiotically, I have not listened to in awhile.

Cherdo, for the record, I *STILL* have 'Moondance' playing while typing this comment.

    As for the Battle...

Van Morrison versus Sting and That-Other-Guy (who lasted about 1 minute before I hit "Stop")? Oh, too easy. It's VAN MORRISON every day and twice on Sundays!!

Bless And Be Blessed, Sister Goodfriend.

    1. I love that Cathy and I were on the same page, ha ha! And hey, though I didn't think Ryan Star would win, he did get a vote or two. Not too shabby.

Van Morrison is a classic and "Moondance" is required listening. Period.

      Always a pleasure, brudder.

  5. Each of these has something to offer that I like a great deal. I like them all, but for the most listenable over the long run for me would be the song by Sting. However, Van's song carries a lot of sway. Still, I'm going with Sting.

  6. Cherdo,

We are the same page this battle but then Stephen already gave you a bit of a spoiler didn't he? I like your take by picking three different songs bearing the same name. Cool concept. I know the first two artists, the third is new-to-me. I like all three song but the one that resonates best with my ears and I'm not sure if it's because it's the one I'm most familiar is the second song. Kindly give my vote to Sting.

May God bless you with good health, fill you with happiness, and give you your heart's delight throughout 2019!

  8. Sting gets my vote too but probably just because I know it so well. I looked up the lyrics for the Ryan Star one and I like them a lot. Van Morrison - eh. I like Moondance but couldn't get into this one.

  9. I like this battle. Each one offers something just a little bit different. But after listening to each of them twice, I can honestly say that I prefer Van Morrison's version.

    Have yourself a great 2019!

  10. Wow, a lot of Sting likes so far- but not from me. Van the big winner, Ryan the distant second, Sting the "Green Party Candidate".
