Battle of the Bands: Results and a New, Improved Summertime Battle

Good day, my battle enthusiasts, and welcome to another wrap up of the Battle of the Bands DELAYED!  I apologize for the late results post but assure you that I did make my brain do some learnin' about all the possible reasons a post won't post! Can you say, "form error?" How about "publish fail?"

So, our winner for the June 1 Battle of the Bands for "I Walk the Line" was none other than ED KOWALCZYK

Voting went like this:
    HALSEY: Lee, angryparsnip
ED: Mike, Janet, Stephen, Debbie D., Chris, Holli, Cathy
AVILA: Mary B., Birgit, John H.

To the victor!  Sing it again, Ed K.!

The New Battle! SUMMERTIME

In my last post, I deviated from my standard practice of only using songs I liked (hey, in that way, I always agree with the winner). Truth of the matter, I deviated FAR from that mode because I didn't really care for any of them. But I acknowledge that I am not the only music lover in the world and there are many opinions floating out there in blog land...maybe I'll hit on someone else's favorites! Naw...I consider that experiment a failure. :-)

Summer is almost officially here and there's no end to the number of songs that mention summertime. A few of my favorites are below...which one do YOU prefer?

CONTENDER #1: EDDIE COCHRAN
"Summertime Blues"

CONTENDER #2: SLY & THE FAMILY STONE
"Hot Fun in the Summertime"

CONTENDER #3: SEALS & CROFT
"Summer Breeze"

Let the voting begin! Which summertime tune really makes you tap those toes or think about summer fun? Tell me what you're thinking...

Then check out the peeps' blogs!

  1. I love The Who's version of "Summertime Blues" and prefer it to the the original. From these three, my choice is "Summer Breeze" by Seals & Croft. Not only does it bring back some great memories, it also conveys the languid beauty of a perfect summer day. ☺ Here's hoping your foot problem has been fixed and you're healing well.

    1. When that tune hit the airwaves (back in the day), I became an instant fan of Seals & Croft.

  2. Three great old songs. I haven't heard these in quite a while. I'm going with EDDIE COCHRAN. Love the baseline.

  3. "Summer Breeze" will always get my vote because it is one of my favorite songs. I love the instrumental interlude!

  4. This is a tough one: 3 very different sounding songs and I like all of these.

"Summertime Blues" is a great classic always fun to hear. I've always been fascinated by the unique quality of "Hot Fun"--great sounding song that stands out for the interesting melody and sentiments.

My big favorite of these is "Summer Breeze"--the song as well as the duo holds so many great memories for me. Whenever I hear this song it takes me back to some really good times. My vote is Seals and Crofts with "Summer Breeze"...

  5. Know all three, love all three (though I prefer Blue Cheer's "Summertime Blues"), but my favorite is "Hot Fun In The Summertime." I love the way it starts, with the piano, then the whole band just swings in. I'm going with that.

    1. "Swing" is a good word for it, and if you (as a listener) don't find yourself swaying to it, too, wellll...there's sumpthin' wrong with ya. :-)

  6. All three have been remade by other bands and it's difficult not to hear those remakes. (Especially Type O Negative's remake of Summer Breeze. Which if Seals and Crofts are dead, they would be rolling in their graves to hear.)
Otherwise, all are good. Have to go with familiar though - Summer Breeze.

  7. Great post today.
I seem to like songs very few others like. Love all three songs but have to pick Summertime Blues for the win.... at least for me. I remember listening to this one, loud in the car driving around.

  8. Love all three songs, but without a doubt, my absolute favorite of the three is Summer Breeze. Fun battle! Oh, and did you know that your vote on my battle wasn't really a vote? You voted for the song, but all three contenders did the same song.

  11. Cherdo,

Thanks for sharing the results of your last showdown. I went with the winner in that round. Yay, me!

For this battle it was a toss between two of your picks. Summertime Blues is a fun uptempo tune that makes ya wanna get to your feet but Summer Breeze holds a special place in my heart and stealing my vote. I sure do like those summer breeze, too! :)

  12. DOC MacSIS ~
For me, this Battle of yours is a 180 from your last one. I didn't care for any of the choices last time out, and this time, I love - not like, but LOVE - all three songs. This is easily the hardest Battle for me to decide on in this round. In fact, it's the most difficult BOTB decision I've had to make in ages.

After years of contemplation, I came to the conclusion that Eddie Cochran's 'SUMMERTIME BLUES' can probably lay claim to being the first Punk Rock song. It's proto-Punk, not so much in the sound (as it's too musically accomplished to be mid-'70s Punk and beyond), but the sentiment is the genesis of Punk: Youthful rebellion against the status quo authority figures like parents and government officials.

Back in my Black-Jacketed Youth, I wore an Eddie Cochran pin on my black leather jacket, as Eddie has always been my favorite 1950s rocker. Yes, I have him ahead of everyone else, including Chuck Berry and Elvis.

Under normal circumstances, I would be voting for ALL 3 of these songs. But when you put 'em all against each other... what to do? What to do?

Tell ya what ahm a-gonna do...

At this moment, by my count, the voting looks like this:

    'Summertime Blues' = 3 votes
'Hot Fun In The Summertime' = 2 votes
    'Summer Breeze' = 6 votes

I'm just going to use my vote to tighten up the race a wee little bit. Give my BOTB bote to Sly & The Family Stone. I could have boted for any of these songs with great joy. So I cast my very calculated bote with an abbalouly clear conscience.
