Battle of the Bands: Who's Really Comin' to Town?

A big thanks to FAE the Mistletoe Miss (faraway eyes) for the original creative spark that started what would become the Battle of the Bands and to STEPHEN T. "Ho Ho Ho, You'll Put Your Eye Out Kid" McCARTHY for hosting and keeping us on track. The Battle gets posted on the 1st of each month and results appear magically six days later, SOME TIME (God willing) on the 7th. Cast your vote in the comments below to tell me which tune is your favorite and why. If it's absolutely necessary, I add my own incoherent vote to break any ties and announce the winner...and you get to see how your vote stacked up!

My graphic was actually from last years battle and I'd like to remember all the folks who join us for a season - or for always! Life gets in the way some times, but I'm always grateful for our community of bloggers.

Cut to the chase! It's my favorite Battle of the Bands month and I'd like to share one of my favorite hymns by Charles Wesley, COME THOU LONG EXPECTED JESUS. One of the pastors at my old church used this in service and I have to say...ahhh, beautiful.

The Skit Guys featuring Marcy Priest

Fernando Ortega

Which one is YOUR favorite? Is Jesus the reason for the season at your house, or is it that fat fella (height challenged, I'm sorry) in the red suit? Or Wally Mart worship, maybe? Just another day?

Hint hint...we here at the Flipside are in the camp that "long expects" a visit.

But what about these crazy cats below? What's going on with their seasonal salute to tinsel and tunes? Only one way to find out...go there and vote!

  1. Well, musically, I vote for #2, Fernando Ortega. But I like the video for #1 better with those crazy, flowing paintings of all the Bible stories!

    1. I gotta confess, I love the skit guys video, too. Merry Christmas, my friend.

  2. The Marcy Priest video and song performance were both excellent. However, as a long time Fernando Ortega fan, I prefer his vocal delivery as well as the luminescent instrumental background.

    A vote for Fernando Ortega.

  3. Jesus is definitely the reason for the season in our house.
I like the first one best. Little more contemporary.

    1. At our house, too, Alex! We don't do it any other way. Merry Christmas!

  4. The first one was absolutely lovely! Marcy Priest gets my vote.

    1. Yes, the video really enhances the song, don't you think? Merry Christmas!

  5. Marcy Priest won me over! At my house, Jesus is the reason. I don't even put up a normal tree. It's a Charlie Brown tree that I use. Keeps us humble.

    1. I love Mr. Brown! I have a Charlie Brown manger. :-)

      Merry Christmas, Mary!

  6. The Skit Guys and MP win. I liked the big finish that almost went to the end. Fernando Ortega was a little to monotone for me. He sounded like a church parishioner singing out of a hymnal.

    1. Well, it is a hymn...

But I'll gladly give a vote to HER! Merry Christmas, Mike!

  7. Cheryl,

Beautiful song choice for the beautiful season at hand! Thanks for the introduction, too. ;) I love Marcy's mewsic video. The Skit Guys are incredibly talented sketch artists but it's Fernando Ortega vocals I enjoyed most in this round. Enjoy the Christ celebration all month long, my friend!

    1. Thank you, Cathy! Merry Christmas and God bless.

  8. Ortega for the win! Found his voice richer and more enjoyable. Know the tune well, in Catholic church the words were "Alleluia Sing To Jesus"...

    1. This tune works with any lyrics that praise the newborn King, I think.

      Merry Christmas!

  9. Fernando Ortega was a little too "Contemporary Christian" for me. I really enjoyed Marcy Priest's voice, and as a side note the video was a killer. The Skit Guys get the nod here.

Amid all the hubbub of Christmas, we try hard not to forget that it's The Feast of the Nativity of Our Lord.

    1. I agree wholeheartedly...which is the only way to approach the Christmas season...with your whole heart. Merry Christmas, John!

  10. TAKE TWO!!

First of all, I keep going 'round and 'round trying to decide what I think is the overall funniest movie ever made. For me, it's a contest between 'PLANES, TRAINS & AUTOMOBILES' and the original version of 'ARTHUR' with Dudley Moore. It almost depends upon which movie I happen to be watching at the moment.

BUT(!)... to me, the single funniest SCENE ever filmed is that entire sequence of Ralphie at the department store to see Santa! Regardless of the countless times I've seen it, I still laugh-out-loud! I think that's the ultimate example of black comedy (which I adore). And the direction of that segment / scene is superb - like using that 360-degree shot on Santa's lap, etc. NOTHING makes me laugh more than Santa denying Ralphie's request and then putting the toe of his big boot on Ralphie's forehead and giving him that final tap. HO!-HO!-HO! (GOL!!)

Now, to the subject at hand:

    Excellent song choice, DOC CHERDO!

And, yes, He is coming very soon to a planet (more than) very near you! Are we ready?

I gotta vote for FERNANDO. This is serious business and I prefer the stronger (less wispy) male vocal approach.

We are SO CLOSE to that joyous Moment now! This guy (see video series below) has most definitely learned some things from The Holy Spirit:

My own calculations have the year as 2029, but I hope I'm wrong and it's actually 2028 (365 days sooner!)

  12. The Skit Guys all the way for me because I love how it sounds like a lullaby, the way they did the arrangement plus I prefer her voice over fernando. I am more a spiritual person although i do have 2 nativity scenes up...the small one with handcarved wood pieces from Austria-the Alps and my hubby got me these beautiful Byzantine figures of the nativity and the 3 kings. Christmas is not just Santa or St. Nicholaus but it is a celebration of his birth (although that was more likely in the spring) and what he stands for-peace, Love and family.
