Battle of the Bands: When the Party's Over...Come See ME!

Apologies for ending 2019 with a resounding, "meh." For some reason, I was getting mad computer hate (Blogger, what is it with you? A simple cache emptying fixed this in the past) and folks, some times it is best to take a deep breath and just let it go. Especially in December... There's only so much fiddling around with the computer that I could offer at that time. It's a long story (you'd thank me for not telling it).

I mentally acknowledged that the 2019 party was over for Cherdo and that made me pretty content, actually.

For the results I missed, here's the run down: The Skit Guys 5, Fernando Ortega 7! For the post that refused to post...curses on you, internet gods. My patience was running thin. Take a victory lap, F.O.: click here to review the winner of the last battle of 2019.

But, it's 2020! My cyberstuff is reorganized and I'm here to say thank you to FAE (faraway eyes) for the original creative spark that started what would become the Battle of the Bands and to STEPHEN T. "Dats My Bro" McCARTHY for hosting and keeping us on track. The Battle gets posted on the 1st of each month and results appear magically six days later, God willing.

My misplaced rebel gene desperately wants to reject all the pop sensations of the present day, but I just can't do it some times. This month, I've been listening to a lot of Billie Eilish and asking myself, "What is so great about Billie?" Digging through the stew of hype, videos, lyrics and "indie" pride, turns out there's several songs from her current album that I truly enjoy. So let's battle this one out with one of those songs: "When the Party's Over."

This is the original as performed at the 2020 Grammy Awards with her brother and collaborator, Finneas, on keyboards:

From the steaming fog of my shower, I can tell you that this is a bit of a challenge to sing, range-wise, so it's not a cover for an amateur.

CONTENDER #1: IBE
From his bio link on YouTube:
"Real talents show what they are capable of at a very young age.
IBE is no exception to that; as a 17-year old he is taking the
music world and the hearts of the public by storm."
From Cherdo:
"Well, it's only fair to pit a 17 year old against an 18 year old. Also, I
want to have him sit at the table while I give him milk and a cookie."

CONTENDER # 2: NERIAH
From her bio link on YouTube:
A big, fat nuttin'.
From Cherdo:
Neriah means "light of Jehovah" and she looks young. Further investigation (Google worm hole...) reveals her last name is Fisher, she's a blogger, born
in LA and she's 19. It's the battle of the youngsters!

By the way, ya'll have no idea how many covers there are of this song, lol.

What do you think? Love it, hate it, but vote, please and then bop on over to the other fine bloggers and see what's up with their Battles. I'll see you on the 7th, deal?

  1. Welcome back, DOC CHERDO! Happy New Year!!

(Incidentally, we have a new-old blogger who has rejoined our BOTB ranks. Do you remember Kim? She's back with a new blog and you can find the link to it on my BOTB page. You missed the party we threw for her last month, but I saved you a party hat and a piece of cake. Bring a fork and a chainsaw! ;^)

Well, I really, really love Ibe's hairstyle. But his singing, not so much.

The song is a bit too minimalist for my tastes, nevertheless, "Light of Jehovah" had the better voice (if not the better hairstyle), so she gets my vote.

So happy to have my MacSis out playing again. (But better stay off that old man's lawn!)

    1. Hey, brudder! I've added Kim and voted accordingly. Sorry to miss the party but thanks for the cake, and the hat is conveniently shaped like my head. :-)

Keeping these contenders YOUNG also cuts into the skill zone. 'Nuff said, lol.

Neriah thanks you! And so do I.

  2. I don't know if either one of these two would make it very far on AGT. Ms. Fisher gets my vote if for nothing more than her bikini picture on Instagram. Neriah also means 'Light, lamp of the Lord'.

    1. Yeah, I was surprised that he made it.

Of course, Ms. Fisher doesn't get any help in my category with bikinis...you gotta have the pipes.

  3. So good to see you back! I did miss you in your absence, but I get the drift. Lately I've been tempted to just stop blogging for a while. And there have been some weird glitches in the systems sometimes.

I was looking forward to seeing Billie Eilish on the Grammies. I wasn't too thrilled with her performance or that song. It was nice and could probably grow on me, but probably never become a favorite.

I commend the two featured artists on their talent. For this song I think the female voice works better so I'm giving my vote to Neriah.

    1. I gotta say that I have no patience for spam, cleaning up posts, etc. and I don't want to moderate every post. But it may come to that. Basically, our computer is about work primarily and that gets most of the seat-time.

As for Billie on the Grammys, who is working sound here? You'd think the balance would be fantastic, but I didn't think so at all.

      Neriah says thanks!

  4. Welcome back to the blogging world.
Afraid it's just not a song I care for. I think she sings better than he does though and will give her my vote.

  5. Unfortunately, the Billie Eilish one won't play in Canada because of copyright reasons, and I don't like the other two. So no one gets my vote today!

  6. I vote for Neriah. IBE's voice is annoying.

  7. Welcome back!

And thank you for the update on your last battle. The numbers have been captured and saved for posterity!

I have a hard time getting past Billie's hair color. And her singing(?) feels much more like mumbling. But, I do agree that she does have one or two songs that are alright. Besides that, Dave Grohl has given a vote of confidence in her favor, so I give her a second or third chance.

For this battle, it's not a hard decision. I really liked Neriah's version the best.

    1. Neriah says thanks, I'm sure. Maybe I'll ask her to chime in...

Anyone who gets a thumbs up from Dave Grohl is okay in my book.

Hope you are feeling great! Prayers continue, friend.

  8. So I scrolled the comments, and my thoughts matched the majority: The song didn't grab me too much, but she was way better. Good luck with the milk and cookies...

The crowd speaks and I listen! Looks like Ms. N is ahead so far.

  9. I was totally unaware of Billie Eilish's existence until the day after the Grammies. The whistling at the beginning of IBE hurt my ears and attracted dozens of dogs from the hood. He also makes weird faces when he sings. I vote for Neriah.

    Love,
Janie, who now has to figure out where all these dogs live

    1. LOL...keep those dogs! Dogs are great!

I knew about Billie Eilish, but I'll admit there were a few that were strangers to me on that Grammy broadcast.

BTW, what did you think of Demi Lovato's "Anyone?" She really put her all into that song. Bravo, Demi.

  10. Billie Eilish and her brother make a good team. She has a decent voice, but, that green hair? Oh well, people thought we looked weird when we were young, too. As for the contenders, I thought IBE was way too morose. Neriah definitely did it better.

    1. Neriah is coming out on top.

The brother/sister team really is a good one; he is perhaps even more talented, in my opinion.

      Thanks, Debbie!

  11. Cherdo,

I wondered what happened to ya last month. I figure you were taking a break with all the holiday madness. This is not a favorite song. Between the two cover artist I think my ears prefer IBE. Instinctively, I think this is a song for a female voice but IBE pulled his it off better than I had expected. Neriah has a nice voice and perhaps I'd like it even more if I heard her sing something else. Perhaps I need to go sample more of her stuff on YT. So glad to have you back in Blogosphere, my dear. Nice battle!

      Thanks for the vote!

  12. Great battle here; the contestants seem pretty evenly matched, both age- and talent-wise. I'm giving my vote to Neriah simply because I prefer the sound of her voice over IBE's by a tiny bit.

Sorry you were having so much trouble there at the end of the year, and I hope this year is better! Blog and computer issues are SO frustrating. I currently can't link to any Mr. Linky posts except to do it on my phone. I know my ten year old Macbook is an issue, but something with my blog is also an issue, and I don't even care to try to figure it out as long as I'm able to participate in linkups without too much trouble. Of course, that will change when I can no longer link with my phone, but I am enjoying this while it lasts.

    1. Thanks for stopping by, Kim!

Some of these issues are Blogger based, some are computers...I'm actually pretty decent on troubleshooting but there are times when it's the last thing in the world that you want to deal with. Like at Christmas, with all the other zillion things that want your attention. Am I right or am I right?

      Perspective! That's what we need.

Glad to have you batylkn' with us.

  17. HEY! Who is this person you're using for your picture. I thought I was on the wrong blog! But that's the thing that women have down pat. Completely changing what they look like. No, I'm not going to pick which picture I like better.

    1. Well, here is the REAL DEAL on that picture: I've dyed my hair for all but the first 18 years of my life. Frequently, I'd mention that to my friends and they always poo-pooed it, as if I was exaggerating. Naw, they'd say, you aren't THAT gray. The proof is in the pudding. I finally just stopped one day when I realized it was a dye or die situation with some very obvious white roots.

Friends, all these years, I wasn't lying. :-)
