Battle of the Bands: Something Handy for the Peeps

Ladies and Gentlemen:
This is the Battle of the Bands!

As always, a big thank you to FAE (faraway eyes) for the original creative spark that started what would become the Battle of the Bands and to STEPHEN T. "Brudder!" McCARTHY for hosting and keeping us on track. The Battle gets posted on the 1st and 15th of each month and results appear magically six days later, God willing.

How'd your Valentine's Day shake out? Did you and your honey "cut a rug?" Did you give him/her some sugar? Get or give flowers...candy...

Long ago, my dear husband put forth the theory that Valentine's Day was for card-hoarding schmucks and those who pride themselves on public displays of affection. Hey...it's HIS theory; I kinda take the stance that there's not enough celebrations in the world and I'll take all I can get, regardless of origin. Hallmark...well played.

For Hubzam's benefit and amusement, each February 14th, I respond with a ridiculous display of heart-shaped food, candies, and miscellaneous goodies. I'll celebrate alone, if necessary. But, it's never necessary.

My refusal to ignore Hallmark's challenge to love it up and his solid insistence it's a "made up holiday" makes us both smile at our mutual stubbornness. We're actual a greatly matched pair, comfortable with our weird quirks and willingness to (actually, the way we look forward to) laughs at our own expense. I love that about him.

In short, it's sure handy to have a honey. If you don't have one...get one. If you have one -- hold on to them! If you've got a BAD one, think long and hard about who you will spend next Valentine's Day with...life is too short. And you're always welcome to stop by my house on the 14th of February for heart-shaped meatloaf and dessert.

But if you still think you're unlucky in love, maybe you just need to find a HANDYMAN...hmmmm...

  1. Think I'll go with Don Campbell just because it's a little different.

  2. I was pretty sure Sweet Baby James would be my pick because this is one of my faves of his, but to my surprise I like the reggae-tinged stylings of Don Campbell better -- so he's got my vote!

  3. Del Shannon all the way. Haven't heard that in years. Took me back.

    1. I never recalled hearing it in the first place, so I was pretty psyched when I found it. Thanks, Mike!

    1. It's pretty catchy. Prior to hearing this version, I'd have thought reggae was a bad idea for Handyman.

  5. If the original by Jimmy Jones was in the group, I'd go with that, but since it isn't, give my vote to Del Shannon.

  6. Do not like the song at all but Del Shannon takes me back.
Plus I worked for Hallmark for many years. I designed the cards that "Dear Husband" didn't like ! Woo Hoo !

  7. Howdy, muh MacSIS ~

Didn't expect you to be Battlin' today. But then again, I didn't expect muhself to be Battlin' today, either. Happy to find ya here, m'dear.

Not to nitpick but... I think we can safely say that James Taylor's recording of this song was not - strictly historically-speaking - "the original". But, hey, what's "strictly historically-speaking" between friends?!

I thought I'd protly be boting for Del Shannon (since I'm old and half-deef, anyway), but I actually preferred Otis Campbe-- er... I mean, DON Campbell. Because Otis Shannon was just too dern fast.

    1. Yada yada yada...you know I'm old and can't communicate effectively. What I meant to convey was that sweet baby James' version was the chart topper, #1 version, that everyone USUALLY compares others to...but I is and shall always be, just ever so slightly stoop-id.

Between you and me...I had you pegged for Del Shannon. Nice surprise! Thanks, Brudder!

  8. I've never been much into Valentine's Day other than when I was in elementary school and it was kind of a thing back then. And my wife having grown up in Ecuador didn't celebrate V-Day so neither of us pay much attention to the fabricated holiday. We had a lunch together to escape the crowds--and that's usually when we have our main meal. Kind of just another day for us.

I've always been a Del Shannon fan--one of the first pop artists that I really liked. I'll give my vote to his version though I'm not a big fan of any version of this song.

    1. You brought up an important point that I totally neglected: elementary school! I loved making Valentines or picking some out at the store. For the life of me, I don't know why, but I loved loved loved doing that.

As an adult, every time I'm teaching a class, no matter the age of the students - I give them all Valentines and candy.

Maybe I DO like Valentine's Day in a non-traditional adult way. Or I'm childish. You be the judge. I can take it.

      Thanks, Arlee!

  9. Hey there Cherdo!

I'm finally getting around to visiting peeps. I'm going to vote for Don Campbell - even though the song sounded very much like Boy George's Karma Cameleon.

  10. Happy Belated Valentine's Day to you, darlin'! It's truly nice to have a honey to share the love fest with for sure. We had a totally relaxing long holiday weekend together. It was really super nice, too. I'm gonna give my vote to DON CAMPBELL. When you get a chance stop off and let me know which artist you like the best in my Heart and Soul #BoTB Showdown, my dear. Have a good week!

    1. Happy belated to you, girlfriend!

How about the way our Thursday is shakin' out? My dog hates me for walking her in cold, nasty sleet and snow.

      Thanks, Cathy!

  11. Valentine's Day seems to be a divisive issue for many. 😆 In over 46 years of marriage, we haven't celebrated it once, because we agree with your hubby. It's a fake holiday and a cash grab. We prefer to celebrate our love on our own terms, according to our own schedule and not that of the retail industry. Every weekend (because hubby still works Monday to Friday) is Valentine's Day at our house, along with every birthday and anniversary and sometimes, just because. 😃 As for the battle, Don Campbell's reggae take sounded better to my ears. Thanks for voting in my battle too! I'm running way behind this week.

    1. Just recently, I messed with a time honored tradition. My husband and I always go to lunch and do errands together on Saturday afternoon BUT I've been shadowing my favorite dog trainer to learn the ropes and start doing a little of that in the future. Three classes on Saturday morning/afternoon have cause a bit of an upset in the schedule and I feel guilty.

Three cheers for early dinner! I can roll with it.

      Thanks, Debbie!

  12. I am single, so I just don't really celebrate Valentines. We did make Valentines chocolates at my workplace (well, my students did and I just assist). In Japanese traditions, girls make or give chocolates for Valentines. Guys will return the favorite a month later on White Day.

I have been sick since last week, so all I did during the weekend was sleep. I still have no voice but doing ok.

My vote goes to Don Campbell. Love me some Jamaican reggae!

      Hope you're feeling better soon!

  13. I am glad you celebrated Valentine's day..you reminded me of my mom who always made a nice dinner and had a heart-shaped box on our plates that had chocolates inside it. My daddy got the biggest box:). I will give this to Del Shannon because he gave his all to this song whereas the second didn't do much for me at all
